Barbara. A lot of federal workers were out here yesterday. We spoke with them at this metro stop yesterday. They were telling me they were very nervous. Today they say simply they are annoyed and without a paycheck. Its really happening . Ice really shocking. Reporter 800,000 federal worker, those considered nonessential, forced off the job without pay. No check, no checking email, no work, no answers for who knows how long. Morale is very low. Reporter its been 17 years since a shut down like this one. Many of the federal workers unsure of how the next few days will play out. Just going in and they ale give me my letter and send me home. Reporter spending just the morning at the office. We cant do anything. Basically weve got four hours to do the work it takes to have an orderly shutdown, and then we go home. The interstates are, the major highways, state highways are shut down. We keep on trying different routes. And we come to the end of the road where its flooded and then we see rescues. We see the same kind of scenes unfolding in these small towns in east texas that we saw unfolding in houston. And there are real fears that the kind of flooding theyre talking about in beaumont is going to be even worse than what we saw in houston. And there is a perilous situation unfolding in port arthur, which is just slightly east of bomon. There is a city center there that theyre using as a shelter for hundreds of people. That civic center is filling up with water. Officials have to figure out not only how to get those people out of there, but where theyre going to go. These roads are impassable. They are limited.
