Sun 24 Jan 2021 13.00 EST I was on the Eurostar, somewhere between St Pancras and Paris, when a senior member of the Guardian team called and suggested that it might be a good idea for me to turn around at Gare du Nord and return to London. It was 3 March 2020. This was not the plan. The plan had been to go to the Chanel show and report for the news pages. Instead, it was the beginning of all plans – work and otherwise – disintegrating. 2020 was a terrible year for the world, and a head-spinning one for fashion. Almost everything that could have unravelled did, from brands reneging on orders and shamefully leaving garment workers unpaid, to the cancellation of Hollywood red carpet events, to the nixing of fashion shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. ....
Patti Smith is marking Inauguration Day with a rendition of The People Have the Power, the rousing song she co-wrote with her late husband Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith in 1988. Smith and her band specially recorded the new version in New York last week. “It’s a beautiful night, we have a new president and vice president and our democracy seems to be quite intact,” she says in the video. The 30-minute presentation combines music with poetry and will be free to watch on the CIRCA YouTube channel at 20:21 GMT/15:21 EST on 20 January. The video also includes Smith s performance of Grateful (2000), and both songs are set against a montage that pays homage to individuals and organisations past and present who have used their voices to create a better future. These include Shirley Chisholm, the first black Congresswoman; the environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg; Vice President-elect Kamala Harris; the anti-gun activist Naomi Wadler; as well as the Soup Kitchen in Holbo ....

They have said we are a lifeline.” Fulton usually designs clothes – Killing Eve star Jodie Comer recently wore a jumpsuit by her – but since Covid hit, she has been making scrubs for NHS workers. The Emergency Designer Network, which Fulton runs with fellow designersBethany Williams and Phoebe English, with Cozette McCreery, has provided nearly 3,500 sets of scrubs, mainly to the Royal Free and Middlesex University Hospital. ....
