Affordable broadband is finally within reach
At the end of 2020, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, a $1.4 trillion budget that included the largest public investment in broadband since the 2009 Recovery Act. Part of this $7 billion injection into broadband was the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, a $3.2 billion program to be managed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to subsidize broadband subscriptions by $50/month and $75/month on tribal lands for low-income households adversely impacted by the coronavirus. Currently, the FCC is trying to figure out how to operationalize this fund, and early in January 2021 released a Notice of Inquiry to ask for public comments. The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic is diverse and every nation is combating it in its own fashion. It is important to note that the policy measures implemented during the pandemic are strongly related to the state of the economy before the pandemic. The state of the Brazilian labour market amid the pandemic cannot be seen in isolation from the pre-Covid times. RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The emergency aid, paid to over 66 million Brazilians last year, represented an expanded employment cost of R$326 billion, according to an unprecedented study by Santander bank.
The Emergency Benefit for Preservation of Employment and Income (BEM), which enabled the reduction of working hours and wages in order to preserve jobs, also contributed to this result. According to the Ministry of Economy, the BEM served ten million workers and 1.5 million companies.

LAKE PLACID Both New York senators Democrats Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, voted Monday, Dec. 21 for the $900 billion pandemic relief package aimed at delivering financial help to citizens and businesses and to help states pay for COVID-19 vaccinations.
The Senate cleared the package by a 92-6 vote after the House approved it by another lopsided vote, 359-53, according to The Associated Press. ....

Officials in Sullivan County are advising residents that the Home Energy Assistance Program s Emergency Benefit component will open and begin accepting applications on January 4, 2021.
The emergency benefits are available to assist eligible households with a heating emergency or a heat-related domestic emergency. Regular component benefits if available must be utilized first to resolve heating emergencies for eligible households.
Included in the emergency benefits are temporary relocation for housing emergencies, and propane tank deposits to obtain new propane vendors, but only in emergency situations, such as relocation due to eviction or if the home is deemed uninhabitable. ....
