Nicholas, Wilson Cary (1761–1820) – Encyclopedia Virginia


Nicholas was born on January 31, 1761, in Williamsburg and was the son of Robert Carter Nicholas and Anne Cary Nicholas. His father was a prominent member of the House of Burgesses and later treasurer of the colony and a judge of the state’s High Court of Chancery. After moving with his family to Hanover County during the American Revolution, Nicholas reportedly spent time as a student at the College of William and Mary about 1779. He was appointed a lieutenant of Virginia’s volunteer troops in 1780. That same year his father died and Nicholas, his mother, and her other children, including his brother Philip Norborne Nicholas, later Virginia’s attorney general and a member of the Convention of 1829–1830, soon relocated to a Nicholas plantation in Albemarle County. On January 29, 1785, Nicholas married Margaret “Peggy” Smith, the daughter of a wealthy Baltimore merchant. They had at least three sons and seven daughters. The mention of the War of 1812 resounded in the halls of the Senate on the evening of January 6, 2021, a day that should have been one to rejoice that the nation’s voters’ word would be heard as each state electoral college vote would be read and a new president confirmed.  So, what was the War of 1812?  This is known as a conflict fought between Britain and the United States, each having allies taking sides.
In Europe, Britain, a naval power, and France, the land power were at war with each other with each one trying to cripple the economy of the other with blockades and confiscation of trade goods.  In the meantime, the United States was trying to stay neutral having been at war quite recently with the Revolution. Britain declared orders to treat, as an enemy, any ships that tried to enter a French port without first stopping at a British port to pay a fee and get a license. Dec. 22, 1807: President Thomas Jefferson signs the Embargo Act in response to British seizure of American cargo and impressment of American seamen during the Napoleonic wars.
The law, which forbids trade with other nations, hobbles Maine seaports’ economy, which was thriving until then. The law is repealed two years later, but continued agitation from the British eventually leads to the War of 1812.
For several reasons, these events all influence the ultimately successful effort to separate Maine from Massachusetts in 1820. ....
