LAPS News:
The Los Alamos School Board gathered virtually Tuesday evening for its first meeting of the new year Tuesday.
The first order of business at the meeting was to elect board members into officer positions.
After reviewing roles and responsibilities and considering those interested in serving as an officer the board casts its votes.
The following positions were filled:
Board President Melanie Colgan;
Board Secretary, Dawn Jalbert.
“I am honored and humbled to have been elected president of the Los Alamos Public School Board,” Colgan said. “I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. I would also like to thank Ellen Ben-Naim for her service as board president for the past two years. Her strong dedication to the betterment and continued success of LAPS should be applauded.” ....

First Born Program Hosts Holiday Baby Gift Event

First Born Program News:
The First Born Program of Los Alamos distributed baby gifts Saturday, Dec. 19 to member families.
Each of the 70 families received a beautiful handcrafted wooden toy and a previously loved book. The babies were delighted to choose which book and toy to take home. The gift bag also included cookies baked by Borrow a Baker.
Though the morning was quite cold for a drive up outdoor event, the joyful smiles brought warmth and good cheer. One parent exclaimed, “Wow, this is amazing! I feel like our family just got a big hug from the community. We will treasure these gifts.” ....

Participants in the School Board Zoom meeting were able to post comments under each strategic plan focus area using Jamboard, a resource used by LAPS teachers.
LAPS News:
The Los Alamos Public School Board met Dec. 8 for its final board meeting of 2020.
President Ellen Ben-Naim opened the meeting with a moment of silence for the schools and families who have lost loved ones or have family in the hospital due to COVID-19 and those struggling to recover.
Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus then recognized President Ben-Naim for serving two years as school board president, saying, “On behalf of LAPS, we express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for your service.” ....

County Council Discusses Racial Equity And Inclusion

Los Alamos County Councilor Katrina Martin provided an update on discussions with community organizations regarding diversity, equity and inclusion along with initial recommendations for some next steps, during the Tuesday night council meeting held via zoom.
Recommendations include:
Implement implicit bias training for County staff and elected officials contract a trainer with complementary outside perspective;
Review the Community Equity and Inclusion Survey (performed in the fall of 2020) to identify potential areas for future action;
Direct the County Manager to discuss best practices for diversity and inclusion in recruitment and hiring with new human resources manager; ....

During its Dec. 8 meeting, the Los Alamos School Board heard presentations from state legislators on the upcoming legislative session that begins in January.
This meeting was the last before the Board elects new officers.
Sen. Leo Jaramillo represents District 5, which includes the Los Alamos town site. Jaramillo is a newcomer to the Roundhouse, so this will be his first legislative session. ....
