1 dead after police chase, crash in Elk River following Minneapolis shooting

The chase happened Saturday afternoon on Highway 10, and ended near Proctor Avenue Northwest.

ELK RIVER, Minn A man is dead after leading Sherburne County law enforcement on a high speed chase on Highway 10 Saturday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), officers spotted a vehicle thought to be connected to a shooting in Minneapolis earlier Saturday heading east on Highway 10 in Big Lake.
The release said Sherburne County deputies and State Patrol troopers tried to stop the vehicle, and Elk River Police joined in the pursuit. The man then allegedly shot at the law enforcement officers pursuing him. ....

MINNEAPOLIS In his first court appearance since the death of Yadhira Romero Martinez, Jose Daniel Cuenca Zuniga said he wants to return to his home country. Despite his attorney s protests, the murder suspect continued speaking during the hearing, protesting the bail amount set by the judge.

I ve noticed in the past year that it seems people are driving a lot faster on the highways. I spend a several hours a week traveling on I-94. I try keep it under 80, just barely, and cars just blow by me. Some have to be doing at least 95 MPH on an interstate highway where the speed limit is 70.

Last week, police stopped a Dodge Durango a little before 11 AM on Highway 169 in Elk River. The Durango was clocked at 98 MPH in a 65 MPH zone.
The driver claimed he was late for a10 AM appointment was “just trying to make up some time,” according to the police report. Elk River Police Capt. Bob Kluntz said the unidentified driver was cited for speeding. ....

Police report: A stolen dishwasher, a handgun found in search and a remorseful hit and run driver

A dishwasher that had been installed in the kitchen of a new home in Elk River was stolen after someone broke into the residence.
Two garage service doors were pried open to gain entry to the Regenscheid Custom Homes property, which is located in the 20000 block of Yale Street in Elk River.
Estimated loss is $380. Damage is estimated at $1,000.
The burglary was reported to police on Dec. 7.
Handgun, drugs found during search
Two St. Paul men were arrested Dec. 3 after a traffic stop in Elk River.
Police had pulled the vehicle over at 9 p.m. at Highway 10 and Highway 169. After the officer detected the odor of marijuana, a search turned up a handgun and methamphetamine. ....
