killed hundreds of birds. kpix5 ryan takeo is in san francisco to tell us why the lawmaker s response was weak. return a couple of state lawmakers say there is a loophole in state law. that loophole hampered the response to that mystery goo. it is very frustrating. reporter: the mystery goo described as a nonpetroleum oil killed 320 birds on the san francisco bay this year. and the lawmaker response they say was lack luster. state help was limited because state emergency number is only available for fuel spills so instead of a widespread response, all of the work was left up to nonprofits like san francisco bay keeper, and those nonprofits got stuck with the tab. if you add up all of the costs of all of the responders, it was up wards of $300,000. reporter: the proposed bill would let fish and wildlife borrow up to half a million dollars for spills that don t involve petroleum. we got the best out of a bad situation. and we hope those things will not repeat themse

called to an apartment complex on senter road in east san jose. they were met with gunfire. officer michael johnson was killed. people were evacuated from the area overnight. a family member called police to report that the suspects was despondent, intoxicated and might have access to weapons. when officers arrived on the scene they spotted a man on the balcony. moments later, shots were fired hitting officer johnson. he died at the scene. san jose police say the gunman, 57-year-old scott dunham, is dead. police found his body at about 3:20 this morning. it is not clear whether he was hit by the return fire from police or whether he took his own life. a witness described what happened last night. third or second floor, but shot down so he is on one of them floors on the patio. reporter: can you tell me whattist condition was like? yeah. can you tell me what the shooting was like? yeah. he died instantly. i know he died instantly. this has been san jose s darkest h

the abduction of his client denise huskins was not staged as police have said. he says she met with vallejo police detectives for several hours yesterday and he says the police assertion that she has made this up has made denise even more upset. she is absolutely unequivocally 100% positively a victim. she is victimized initially from being kidnapped and a second time by allegedly being a suspect by the vallejo police department. an attorney for denise s boyfriend aaron quinn says there was a reason aaron did not call police immediately after the alleged abduction this week. aaron claims at least two kidnappers bound and drugged him. so far police aren t saying anything about these new claims. 6:01 now. hopefully moving right along in some fog, live look at the golden gate bridge now on this friday morning. we re going to check in with liz to find out how our morning commute is. liz, take it away. thanks. we ll go out to a live look at one of our bridges to the actu
