A look back on PHA, IFC Senate seats after ASG amendment vote

Associated Student Government abolished its guaranteed Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council seats in its April 28 session.
It marked the first time in at least three years in which PHA and IFC wouldn’t have any guaranteed representation in the Senate.
Only one senator, the Northwestern College Republicans representative, voted against the amendment, according to senators present. The amendment was authored by former PHA Senator Pamela Chen, and sponsored by then-ASG President Juan Zuniga and 13 other ASG members.
Chen, a former PHA senator whose term expired April 1, said she was grateful that the amendment passed with a lot of Senate support. ....

ASG passes bill to reform executive board selection

Associated Student Government passed emergency legislation to reform its executive board selection as a part of a series of changes to prioritize diversity and inclusion in senior leadership on Wednesday.
The legislation, authored by Weinberg junior and ASG Chief of Staff Elizabeth Sperti and co-sponsored by six ASG members, sought to remove the Chair of Student Activities, a position within the cabinet that has remained vacant in the past year due to a lack of candidates.
The bill will replace the position with three new cabinet members, including two who would be selected from the Executive Office of Justice and Inclusion. The chief of staff will select candidates in an interview process, and finalists will be presented to the Senate for majority approval, according to the legislation. ....

Newly-elected Rules Committee members hope to make ASG more inclusive

Associated Student Government senators campaigned for vacancies on the Rules Committee in the organization’s Wednesday session, hoping to use the committee to make student government more equitable.
The Rules Committee works as the judicial branch of ASG, ensuring legislation aligns with ASG code and reviewing and updating the code if necessary.
While these changes are usually small, the committee has the power to do more, Elizabeth Sperti, Weinberg junior and chief of staff, said.
“The rules committee can be a really great place to (make significant changes to ASG),” she said.
ASG elected For Members Only Senator Jason Hegelmeyer, Medill Senator Julia Karten and Hillel Senator Dalia Segal-Miller to fill vacant seats on the Rules Committee. All three senators said they want to make a larger impact on ASG. ....

ASG votes for two new Finance Chairs
Associated Student Government swore in Weinberg sophomore Rebecca Huang and Weinberg junior Cristina Rackley as the new chairs of the Student Activities Finance Committee in Wednesday’s Senate meeting.
The chairs, selected through a committee, are responsible for distributing funding to student organizations and managing the committees internal operations. Selection committee member Zai Dawodu said she was impressed by Huang’s and Rackley’s devotion to improving the committee.
“The finance chairs are incredibly important and do tons of good work, so having competent people in the role is really important,” ASG Chief of Staff Elizabeth Sperti said at a previous meeting. ....
