JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – While grocery stores and state-run coronavirus vaccine clinics focus on inoculating people over 65 and healthcare workers against COVID-19, Gov. Ron DeSantis has tasked hospitals with vaccinating people with preexisting conditions.
But Florida hospitals say they’re not getting enough vaccine doses from the state to make a significant dent in that vulnerable population. According to data released Tuesday by the Florida Department of Health, 4,808 people under the age of 65 have died from COVID-19 complications and 33,836 have been hospitalized. ....

Study suggests pregnant women could pass along COVID-19 antibodies to their newborns
The study provides evidence that women who had COVID-19 while pregnant passed along antibodies through the placenta to their infants.

A new study gives hope for babies entering the world during this pandemic. Hope that they may have a layer of protection against COVID-19 if their mothers pass along COVID antibodies to them. 
It looked at a study from a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Out of a little more than 1,500 women who gave birth at the hospital between April and August of 2020, 83 had COVID antibodies, and 72 of the women s babies umbilical cord blood tested positive for the antibodies. ....

Duval County Health Department reports that UK COVID-19 variant detected in Jacksonville


A case of the COVID U.K. variant has been detected in Jacksonville according to the Duval County Health Department.
The Health Department says only one variant case has been detected at this time and that it s confident the vaccine is effective in fighting it off.
The coronavirus variant first identified the U.K. is doubling every 10 days in the U.S., according to a new study. 
The report  not yet peer-reviewed found the new strain called B.1.1.7. is 35%-45% more transmissible than other strains of the virus currently in the country.
Dr. Greg Poland, professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Mayo Clinic and director of Mayo s Vaccine Research Group, said the model appears to be appropriate and duplicates what we saw in the U.K. with this variant ....
