The number of COVID patients in the local hospital has increased to 35 as of Tuesday afternoon, officials have said. The number of hospitalizations increase by nine over the 26 reported last week, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center spokesperson Elizabeth McCown said in a statement. The hospital’s seven day moving target averages of new COVID-19 admissions and hospitalizations sat at five per day and 29 per day, respectively, McCown said. According to the statement, Guadalupe County had reported 6,429 cases of the disease. The total included 5,128 recoveries, 878 probable recoveries, 238 confirmed active and 136 probable active cases, the statement read. Additionally, the hospital announced it expects to receive 800 Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, though not for distribution to the general public, McCown said. However, a state agency said wider distribution of vaccines is on its way.

GRMC receives COVID-19 vaccine, administers to healthcare workers

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center received a shipment of COVID-19 vaccinations on Wednesday morning and began administering shots to healthcare workers. The local hospital received 800 Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations through a distribution program the state of Texas runs, according to a news statement GRMC Public Information Officer Elizabeth McCown released. “Together, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and Guadalupe Regional Medical Group employs over 800 people that have been on the front line of caring for COVID-19 patients during the ongoing pandemic,” she said. “We anticipate this initial COVID-19 vaccine shipment will be completely distributed to our healthcare providers.” Decisions to receive or decline vaccination should be discussed among individuals and their family practice healthcare providers, McCown said. COVID numbers remain high

The county also recognized another resident’s death related to the virus, Patrick Pinder said. “Since the start of COVID-19, there have been 48 deaths reported to Guadalupe County Emergency Management by (the Texas Department of State Health Services),” said Pinder, who serves as emergency management coordinator and fire marshal in Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County reported 320 confirmed active cases of COVID-19, 153 probable active cases and 4894 recoveries, among the 48 deaths, Pinder said. He said the confirmed active cases were dispersed throughout the county as follows: New Braunfels had 44; Cibolo, 59; Seguin, 54; Schertz, 71, Marion, 6, Selma, 3, and the unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County had 83 cases.
