to welcome t.j. stiles and he s an award-winning author based out of berkeley, california and he s a native of minnesota and the graduate of carlton college. he went on to do his graduate work in history, not u.s. history, but european history at columbia. he spent time at oxford university press and i believe the board is here today t.j. worked with gabor on a number of items and there is gabor in the audience. items that gabor put together and those speeches were delivered right here at cwi. t.j. and i had a little time yesterday to talk about his work and to talk about the craft of writing and our conversation reminded me of the fact that this that we have of professional academic writing and then there is popular writing. i think the day has come that we can just move away from that and t.j. stiles, his work testifies to the fact that you can write engaging bog rav we ideas, with argument, with analysis and above all else, original research. t.j. likes the archives. there

topics. it s one of the few places if not the only place where you can see and hear a lot of different voices and perspectives on a lot of different topics. we bring in authors who are well-known but we also bring in authors that you might not know so well. they have a story to tell, they have something to say and so we bring that opportunity to our viewers with different voices. we are talking about isis and tears him the viewers and feedback is really vital to c-span in general. that s part of our mission statement, trying to get viewers to participate. we spend a lot of time thinking about what our viewers would want. we listen to our viewers about who they want to hear and who they want to see. we take that into account. we will have call in program we can bring the viewers into the mix so they can talk to the authors as well. we have facebook comments and tweets and were getting that constant feedback for them. we go out to the festivals and do live programs and th

tonight at the kansas city public library is really honored to have the author of three of the best american biographies of the last 20 or 30 years to kind of collect important that t t.j. stiles has given us of the mid-19th century. first his book about jesse james which he helped us understand fictional creation of the legends, elegant initial credit by the kansas city star. that would of course never happened today. [laughter] it s about the civil war of course but it s also about a great american theatrical tradition, decoration of celebrities in public life. that would never happen again today. he has such great moments, narrative moments. jesse james robbing a train near saint louis and issuing what in essence is the first press release by a bank robber. may be the first press release, bank robber and railroad robber. he makes you understand the dynamics. one of the three books i think that are necessary to understand what happened in our part of the world and also
