While it seems the girl will have some level of permanent brain damage, she continues to make progress, according to her great-aunt, Anita Simms-Doughty. She isn’t been able to talk yet, but recognizes family members. “She’s awake and alert. She knows that everybody is around,” Simms-Doughty said. Muniz and her boyfriend brought the child to Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill on Feb. 24, where doctors found multiple injuries, including bleeding on the brain and damage to her chest, authorities have said.

The girl, who was placed on a ventilator, also had bruises all over her body and cuts to her mouth and nose.
