Deep Science: AI adventures in arts and letters There’s more AI news out there than anyone can possibly keep up with. But you can stay tolerably up to date on the most interesting developments with this column, which collects AI and machine learning advancements from around the world and explains why they might be important to tech, startups or civilization. To begin on a lighthearted note: The ways researchers find to apply machine learning to the arts are always interesting though not always practical. A team from the University of Washington wanted to see if a computer vision system could learn to tell what is being played on a piano just from an overhead view of the keys and the player’s hands. ....
This AI generates music from silent piano performances The system analyzes video frames of a musician playing the piano Shares Scientists have developed an AI that can generate music from silent piano performances, just by watching the movements of the playerâs hands. The system, called Audeo, analyzes top-down videos of someone tickling the ivories to predict which keys are being pressed in each frame. It then produces a transcript of the music, which a synthesizer translates into sound. The researchers trained and tested the AI on footage of pianist Paul Barton playing tunes by famous composers. They then evaluated the accuracy of the Audeoâs compositions by playing them to music-recognition apps, such as Shazam and SoundHound. ....
Date Time ‘Audeo’ teaches artificial intelligence to play piano A University of Washington team created Audeo, a system that can generate music using only visual cues of someone playing the piano.Patrick Tomasso/Unsplash Anyone who’s been to a concert knows that something magical happens between the performers and their instruments. It transforms music from being just “notes on a page” to a satisfying experience. For journalists A University of Washington team wondered if artificial intelligence could recreate that delight using only visual cues – a silent, top-down video of someone playing the piano. The researchers used machine learning to create a system, called Audeo, that creates audio from silent piano performances. When the group tested the music Audeo created with music-recognition apps, such as SoundHound, the apps correctly identified the piece Audeo played about 86% of the time. For comparison, these apps identified the piece in the audio ....
