“Unfortunately, science as a field, to many, is associated with masculinity, and I wanted to challenge this myth,” said Heba EL-Deghaidy, chair of the Department of International and Comparative Education at AUC s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
A prevalent myth claims that women are “no good” at physics, but just taking EL-Deghaidy as an example, many female members of her family are professors in physics and chemistry, and her educational background is in science education. She also observed numerous women who chose to study the various fields of science throughout her career, confirming that the myth merely stems from a stereotype, which many studies support but aren’t conclusive. ....

Cum Laude for light emitting silicon

Date Time
Cum Laude for light emitting silicon
Chips based on light would revolutionize microelectronics. Elham Fadaly laid the basis for this ‘holy grail’. She managed to let silicon emit light, by forcing it into a new shape. Her work was proclaimed Breakthrough of the Year by Physics World and she received the Nanotechnology Young Researcher award. Fadaly obtained her PhD Cum Laude on April 16
th at the department of Applied Physics.
Silicon is a powerful material pervading our everyday lives. Silicon-based microchips are the basis of nearly every electronic device used in our houses, cars, smart gadgets, and even in the human body. The material is cheap, has superior electronic properties and a mature processing technology. ....

Elham Fadaly '13 and Netherlands Team Win Physics World 2020 Breakthrough of the Year

Recently,
Physics World magazine announced that Elham Fadaly ’13 and her team at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands won the
Physics World 2020 Breakthrough of the Year.
By creating a silicon-based material that emits light efficiently at wavelengths in the range of the optical telecommunications window, the team unlocked a door of opportunities for silicon devices.
What s the Research All About?
Creating silicon-based material that could efficiently emit light for optoelectronic devices has been a “holy grail” in the field of optical electronic devices for the past five decades, if not more, Fadaly explained.
“Scientists have long been chasing the dream of having a silicon-based light source for nearly 50 years due to the important role it will play in the future with data communication via light,” she said. ....
