Inside the structure that was still standing, a race to escape. all i was thinking was, we need to get out of here before this building completely comes down on us. looked to the left and the apartment is half sheered off and i looked right ahead which is where the elevators are supposed to be, just two empty elevator shafts. reporter: told the miami herald his wife, casandra, was speaking frantly about the condo building shaking right before the collapse. according to the paper, she told him she saw a sinkhole out the window where the pool used to be. then the line went down. emergency crews worked to pull 35 people from the part of the structure still standing. but as the first part of the rescue effort turned into days they bussed survivors to the site of the tragedy for the first time sunday. the photos and names of the missing are posted at this memorial as their loved ones wait for any answers. ....

A few minutes later, the fire department showed up. it was the response was incredibly quick. i walked out onto the balcony and yelled down to them to ask whether we needed to evacuate. they said we need to evacuate as quick as possible. so at that moment we grabbed our phones, wallets, keys, and went to open the front door. when we opened the front door, that s when we really were made aware of the devastation to the building. i looked to the left, and the apartment is half sheared off. i looked right ahead, which is where the elevators are supposed to be, just two empty elevator shafts. thankfully, the emergency exit light to the staircase was lit up, so we sprinted to the staircase and opened that door, only to realize that the wall had partially collapsed there. at that moment, it really hit me ....

Haven t been out very far from this building so i haven t been able to assess yet. that was a solid two hours of eye wall conditions here. these elevator shafts were screaming. there was wind blowing through every kind of crack in the door. it was scary. it was whistling through this building. there was doors breaking and windows and doors. things were slamming all over the place and suctioned through the building, the water in the toilet bowl was sloshing. we had the whole thing. we had a direct hit here. we were in the western eye wall. things are starting to calm d n down, and i m going to assess the situation. reporter: i know the feeling, mike. can you sense the building working against the power of the storm, almost standing up to try to bear the brunt of it. mike, thanks so much for being with us. so this is hurricane michael. as we said, the worst of it seems to have passed through panama city beach, moving closer ....
