Pay by palm technology raises security worries

Pay by palm technology raises security worries
News that Amazon in trialling palm-scanning technology at one of its Whole Food stores in Seattle is raising privacy concerns, due to the fact that the technology Amazon is using links a customer’s palm signature with their credit details.
The contactless payment method, known as Amazon One, involves customers enrolling their palms in Amazon’s system to make payments with a palm ‘signature’ which is linked to their credit cards.
The technology works by analysing the bones, creases and other structures beneath the user’s palm, and payments can be made by simply holding their hand over a reader device. ....

Nvidia's Arm deal investigated

Nvidia’s Arm deal investigated
Last week s news that the UK government had invoked National security to probe Nvidia s Arm deal means that the CMA, which was already investigating the possible effect of the deal on competition in the UK, will also now be considering national security interests
While the ‘intervention notice’ issued by the government has raised questions over the $40 billion deal a spokesman for Nvidia said that it didn’t “believe that this transaction poses any material national-security issues,” and that the company was happy to work with the British authorities.
In fact, Nvidia executives were said to have expected a possible UK national-security review, although the use of this little invoked power may still have come as a surprise. ....

Siemens and Google Cloud to cooperate on AI-based manufacturing solutions

Siemens and Google Cloud to cooperate on AI-based manufacturing solutions
Google Cloud and Siemens are to co-operate in order to optimise factory processes and improve productivity on the shop floor.
According to Siemens, it intends to integrate Google Cloud’s data cloud and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technologies with its factory automation solutions to help manufacturers innovate for the future.
Data is critical for today’s industrial processes, but many manufacturers continue to use legacy software and multiple systems to analyze plant information, which is resource-intensive and requires frequent manual updates to ensure accuracy. In addition, while AI projects have been deployed by many companies in “islands” across the plant floor, manufacturers have struggled to implement AI at scale across their global operations. ....

The edge is set to become the 'centre of everything'

The edge is set to become the ‘centre of everything’
New research suggests that up to $800 billion could be spent on new and replacement server equipment and edge computing facilities in the years running up to 2028.
The research, from the Linux Foundation, says that growth is going to be driven by the deployment of 5G in industry, alongside the commoditisation of edge hardware and the rise of open source networking software. It expects investment to be equally split between equipment for the device edge and infrastructure edge.
Legacy data centres are set to become obsolete in the next few years. That s a trend that has been accelerated by the pandemic which has driven the development of tools for remote monitoring, provisioning, repair and management and reduced the cost of edge computing while driving up its use by automation technologies and autonomous systems across sectors from manufacturing to remote healthcare, data management ....
