Conveys a notion of nostalgic and simplicity. It really emphasizes this idea of the 1950s as this era of prosperity, where america was a world leader, and the American People were happy in suburban homes with their nuclear families. I like ike. Its so simple, and it conveys that happiness. This idea, however, is a myth, and its a political construction. The 1950s, in fact, was a time wrought with racial discrimination, conflict, intense political and social pressures to conform to a suburban ideal that imposed gender hierarchies and mandated hetero sexuality in the law. It was a time in which anticommunism targeted the liberal reform impulses of the new deal and frequently an anticommunist took away civil liberties. These are all different areas of political pressures in terms of enforcing certain ideals and resisting against those that we will look at next week. That may be some of you who are reagan aficionados may not have known was influential in reagans overall political career and a relationship that influenced many of the views he became so widely known and praise for throughout the 1980s. Some of you probably do know president reagan had a longstanding and deep relationship with Pepperdine University. In fact president reagan, first , as governor, but then as president , made over half a dozen trips to our malibu campus and also to Downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills for events in support of Pepperdine University. His talk tonight will focus on his first book called, reagans 1968 dress rehearsal and it tells the littleknown story of friendship that developed and ultimately a member a mentorship between eisenhower and reagan. I will not steal the thunder, but dwight d. Eisenhower was really instrumental in Ronald Reagans early political career. We all know how that ended with reagans election as president to decades later. So, he will tell that story. He will talk for about 4550 minutes. There will be some audio and presentations.
