Saua said Hemmingway s jab and uppercut were on the money, and she put the pressure on Meleisea in the corner. “It s a very big result for her. [Meleisea] was No 1 in the country, No 3 in the world, and she was a champion of Australasia before.” Hemingway had two fights lined up, but they have now declined to fight her, Saua said. So now she is going for the New Zealand heavyweight title. She had a couple of potential fights coming up, one in New Zealand and one in Australia, but would have to wait to confirm details. If she could win the New Zealand title, then she would defend it in Palmerston North at a fight night in December.
Taito believed he should have won the last fight. “I think the judges were sleeping through the whole fight and woke up at the last round,” he joked. “For the last fight we only had a few weeks to prepare, which was not enough time for us. “John had a good camp and he s got good trainers around him.” The eight-round bout will be Taito’s second professional fight. He had 23 amateur fights for 19 wins. This will be the biggest fight he s had and he was keen to keep pushing up the ranks. “I definitely want to put myself up there. I want to make it to the top, that s one of my main goals.”
