LANCASTER - “The police reform bill changes things,” Police Chief Edwin Burgwinkel told selectmen Monday. He said the way training of part-time (reserve) and full-time officers occurred used to be different from each other and that had been a “big piece in Lancaster” since the 1960s. But now the training will be standardized in the state and run by two Commonwealth agencies, requiring every officer to be certified with no differential between them. All reserve officers of the Lancaster Police Department have to get additional training within the next year to be certified. New bridge academies will re-train all part-time officers over 200 hours, during evenings and weekends, or with half online and half in person. ....
