American Medical Association journal editor out after questioning 'existence of structural racism'


The resignation happened March 10 but gained renewed attention Thursday by conservative website Campus Reform.
During the Feb. 24 podcast, Dr. Livingston took issue with the term “structural racism” but acknowledged that “disproportionality does exist.”
“…[I]t’s more of a socioeconomic phenomenon,” he said, according to a transcript provided by The Daily Wire. “It isn’t their race; it isn’t their color; it’s their socioeconomic status. It’s where they are.”
About a week and a wave of backlash later, JAMA Editor-in-Chief Dr. Howard Bauchner issued a statement saying the podcast and tweet had been deleted, calling Dr. Livingston’s comments “inaccurate, offensive, hurtful, and inconsistent with the standards of JAMA.” ....

A doctor has been forced out of his position at the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) after expressing a desire to ameliorate racial disparities and to better understand the concept of “structural racism,” but asking whether there might be a more productive term for it.
Edward H. Livingston resigned after being accused of hosting “a harmful podcast” that “minimized the effects of systemic racism in health care and questioned its profound impact on millions of people across the county.”
JAMA, the world’s most widely-circulated medical journal, is published by the American Medical Association (AMA) and also produces podcasts and video reports. The doctors’ group has no editorial control over JAMA’s content. Livingston was JAMA’s deputy editor for clinical reviews and education. ....

Doctor Questions 'Structural Racism' on a Podcast, Gets Booted From the Planet's Leading Medical Journal – RedState


Where medicine’s concerned, Edward H. Livingston recently made his own position clear.

As reported by The Daily Wire, the doctor hosted a February podcast entitled “Structural Racism for Doctors What is It?”
The podcast was sponsored by the Journal of the American Medical Association the world’s most widely circulated medical journal, for which Edward was deputy editor of clinical reviews and education.
JAMA’s published by the American Medical Association, which nonetheless has no editorial control.
During the webcast, Edward chatted up fellow white Jewish man and JAMA Internal Medicine Editor/NYC Health+ Hospitals CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz. ....

March 10, 2021 – Edward H. Livingston, MD, has resigned as deputy editor of the journal of the American Medical Association after he and the journal faced significant backlash over a February podcast that questioned the existence of structural racism.

JAMA over the podcast, called “Structural Racism for Doctors: What Is It?”
It appears they are now getting their wish. Bauchner announced that the journal’s oversight committee is investigating how the podcast and a tweet promoting the episode were developed, reviewed, and ultimately posted. ....
