LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Karen Trujillo was known as a brilliant researcher and passionate advocate for New Mexico students and educators.
A proud Aggie, she earned all three degrees – bachelor’s, graduate and Ph.D. – from New Mexico State University in secondary education, mathematics, and curriculum and instruction. She was also a huge Aggie sports fan, cheering proudly at men’s and women’s basketball games, among other sporting events.
But outside of her family, what was closest to her heart was education. Trujillo became superintendent of Las Cruces Public Schools in 2019, but maintained her deep connection to NMSU.

EL PASO, Texas The late Karen Trujillo, superintendent for Las Cruces Pubilc Schools, not only left behind a legacy for the school district but one at New Mexico State University as well.
Trujillo, a graduate of NMSU for her bachelor s, master s and PhD, was instrumental in starting several programs and initiates for her alma matter.
In 2015, Trujillo helped develop the Educators Rising New Mexico chapter in the NMSU College of Education. The organizations works on increasing the number of education majors and supports retention.
The following year, Trujillo organized the STEM Outreach Alliance Research, or SOAR, now known as the Southwest Outreach Academic Research Evaluation & Policy Center.

A memorial fund has been established to honor the late Las Cruces Public Schools superintendent, Dr. Karen Trujillo, who died Thursday.
The fund will be collected by New Mexico State University. Trujillo’s family plans to create a scholarship fund to support aspiring teachers.
“Karen was passionate about education,” said her husband, Ben Trujillo, who met with the NMSU Foundation to discuss plans to honor his wife’s memory. “She was especially dedicated to the mission of Educators Rising New Mexico, an organization she founded which cultivates highly skilled educators by guiding young people on the path to becoming teachers.”
