DE PERE, Wis. Education has always been a priority in Wisconsin. It s no surprise that the inception of the state s first public university, the University of Wisconsin Madison, coincides with the state s entry into the union as the nation s 30th state. The Wisconsin Idea, part of the university s mission statement, has influenced educators throughout the nation. The concept, first coined in the early 1900s, states that education should influence and guide everyone s lives beyond the classroom. This idea permeates the state s culture, encouraging collaboration between educators and the community, and asserts that teaching and learning should be given priority in the state s legislature. ....
