BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The LSU Board of Supervisors has voted to hire Dr. William Tate as the university’s next president.
Tate will be the first African American to hold the position at LSU and in the SEC. The board voted 15-0 in favor of Tate.
The announcement was made Thursday, May 6, after the three finalists for the position were interviewed by the board earlier in the day. ....

LSU made history Thursday by naming University of South Carolina Provost William Bill Tate as the first Black president in the school s history and the first Black to lead a school in the Southeastern Conference.
Black students weren t even allowed to attend LSU until 1953.
Quite frankly I didn t think this day would come that an African-American would become president in the SEC, Tate said. Y all made it possible.
I m really excited to be part of this community. For me this is all about how we can help students regardless of their background . and give them opportunity to live their dream. ....

William Tate IV was named as the next president of LSU on Thursday, LSU said. When he begins his term in July, he will becomes the first Black president of a university in the Southeastern Conference. Now the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at University of South Carolina, Tate also holds the USC Education Foundation Distinguished Professorship. Tate earned his Ph.D. at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is a past president of the American Educational Research Association and was elected to the National Academy of Education.Tate will take the helm of the university as it deals with a public reckoning over the mishandling of sexual assault and violence allegations on campus.
