A global pandemic, racial injustice and political polarization continue to stress government at all levels. In the context of widespread reports that citizens are dissatisfied with democratic cornerstones such as fair elections, political representation, presidential powers and equal justice, experts at The Ohio State University recently discussed the causes of this loss of faith and what it will take to restore confidence in our systems.
Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce A. McPheron introduced the latest Education for Citizenship dialogue series last week. McPheron tied the university’s land-grant mission to the sustainment of democracy. ....

The contentious 2020 election and the current state of U.S. democracy were topics discussed last week during an Ohio State University-hosted event titled “Race and Democracy in America.”
Tina Pierce of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs moderated a conversation between faculty experts Rachel Kleit, associate dean of faculty affairs in the College of Engineering; Wendy Smooth, associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College of Arts and Sciences; and Winston C. Following a contentious lead-up to the transfer of power in the nation, The Ohio State University will host a conversation on how to repair a divided nation.
Tomorrow, President Kristina M. Johnson will host “Becoming Weavers in a Divided Nation,” part of the university’s Education for Citizenship dialogue series. The live event will take place from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. over Zoom. The conversation is free and open to the public.
