SXSW 'Ludi' Review: A Caretaker Hustling Through Her American Dream Has A Priceless Realization – Selfcare

Ludi directed by Edson Jean and written by Joshua Jean-Baptiste and Jean, stars Haitian-American actor Shein Mompremier. It revolves around a Haitian girl Ludi (Mompremier) who comes to America to live her dreams, her ‘American Dream.’ She works day and light as a nurse, to fend for herself and her family back home but somehow, it’s never enough. In fact, the movie comes to life as she struggles with her bills, pushy co-workers and difficult patients. That and the breaking point, where sh t hits the fan (read face) and it dawns- a caretaker needs selfcare too. Jean’s film, fueled by Mompremier’s performance presents a strong case in front of a generation that loves to glamorize the hustle culture. Read the full review below. ....

Quo Vadis, Aida? by director Jasmila Žbanić picked up the top jury prize and the critics award at the 38th edition of the Miami Film Festival, which handed out trophies on Sunday.
The film about the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica as seen through the eyes of a courageous UN interpreter, Aida, earned the juried Knight MARIMBAS Award. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s shortlisted entry for the Academy Awards also won this year’s Rene Rodriguez Critics Award. ....

Miami Film Festival screening both virtually and in person


The 38th annual Miami Film Festival kicked off with an opening-night celebration featuring smiling actors and filmmakers walking down a lush red carpet as excited attendees snapped their images and media conducted breathless sidewalk interviews, The Miami Times among them.
The scene was a welcome change from last year, when the pandemic forced the festival to be cut short after just six days. Now it’s moving forward with virtual and in-person screenings for its entire 10-day run, which commenced with the world premiere of “Ludi” at Silverspot Cinema last Friday, on Miami’s “305 Day.”
