SEATTLE An Auburn-area man and prominent member of the far-right extremist group the Proud Boys, who was captured on video leading a mob of pro-Trump demonstrators to the U.S. Capitol just before it was breached and ransacked, was arrested and charged Wednesday for his alleged role in planning and participating in last month’s deadly insurrection.
Ethan Nordean, a 30-year-old bodybuilder known in right-wing circles by his alias, Rufio Panman, faces four federal criminal counts in the District of Columbia, including obstructing an official proceeding, aiding and abetting injury to government property, disorderly conduct and knowingly and violently entering a restricted building, according to a criminal complaint. ....

The leadership of the Proud Boys has come under increased scrutiny as agents and prosecutors across the country try to determine how closely members of the far-right nationalist group communicated during the riot at the Capitol this month and to what extent they might have planned the assault in advance, according to federal law enforcement officials.
At least six members of the organization have been charged in connection with the riot, including one of its top-ranking leaders, Joseph Biggs. Biggs, a U.S. Army veteran, led about 100 men on an angry march from the site of then-President Donald Trump’s speech toward – and then into – the Capitol building. ....

U.S. restores relations with Palestinians

U.S. restores relations with Palestinians
The Biden administration announced Tuesday that the U.S. is restoring relations with the Palestinians and will resume supporting assistance programs that deliver humanitarian aid to refugees, a reversal from former President Donald Trump s policies.
Acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Mills said the new policy is the best way to ensure Israel s future as a democratic and Jewish state while upholding the Palestinians legitimate aspirations for a state of their own and to live with dignity and security.
During the Trump administration, the U.S. stopped making contributions to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, which provides education, health care, and aid to Palestinian refugees; shuttered the Washington office of the Palestinian Liberation Organization; and submitted a peace proposal leaving Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which was rejected by the Palestinians. ....

Democrats are preparing for a party-line COVID-19 bill, hoping for bipartisan buy-in

Democrats are preparing for a party-line COVID-19 bill, hoping for bipartisan buy-in
House Democrats will introduce a budget resolution Monday that starts the process for the Senate to use a legislative tool called budget reconciliation to pass President Biden s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package with 51 votes, meaning no Republicans would need to support it if the Democratic caucus stuck together. But Democratic leaders also made sure to underscore Tuesday that they would prefer to pass the COVID-19 package with Republican support, through the regular legislative process.
The work must move forward, preferably with our Republican colleagues but without them if we must, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a news conference. Time is of the essence to address this crisis. Biden s package includes $1,400 direct payments, a hike in the child tax credit, an extension of emergency jobless benefits set to expire March 14, billions for vaccine distribution ....
