中国共产党领导全国人民成立崭新国家之后，我国城市人口不断壮大。这意味着，我国有越来越多的人口依托城市获得了更好的生存发展环境，同时也助推了城市发展。以北京为例，1959年北京常住人口已突破700万人，相当于10年间增长了300万人左右。
从全国来看，虽然1958年出台的《中华人民共和国户口登记条例》对人口从农村迁往城市进行了一定限制，导致大城市人口增长出现短暂放缓，但是随着改革开放的“大潮”涌动，人口迁移条件放宽很快让大城市人口增长进入加速期。仍以北京为例，1972年总人口突破800万人、1980年突破900万人、1986年突破千万人、2011年突破2000万人。
21世纪经济研究院研究发现，上世纪最后10年和本世纪最初10年是北京、上海等大城市人口增长最快的时期，这背后是人口流动条件不断放宽，大量人口“进城”。
