Delta-8 THC Gets Callout From Hemp Association: Week in Review Plus, the USDA’s final rule on hemp is moving ahead as written and will take effect March 22. This week, the U.S. Hemp Roundtable made waves among delta-8 THC producers when it issued a warning against “marketing products, under the guise of the hemp name, for any intoxicating value or euphoric effect,” calling it “irresponsible.” The USHR’s statement comes as the legality of delta-8-THC has come into question with administration of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) interim final rule on hemp. Nebraska Farmers Transition from Hops to Hemp Noting the wide range of botanical similarities between hops and hemp, the team at Midwest Hop Producers is making the switch. Bruce and Annette Wiles in their Plattsmouth, Neb., greenhouse. Annette and Bruce Wiles are spending the snowy winter selling their hops equipment after six years of selling their fragrant flowers in the brewery supply chain. It was a good experience, Annette says now, and the learning curve has helped get them to where they want to be as the 2021 season opens: primed and ready for hemp cultivation. Bruce and his family are third-generation row crop farmers from Nebraska. Annette came from a business background. Six years ago, the allure of the hops market (small acreage, good ROI) brought them to split off from the row crop history and try their hand at something new. USDA Introduces Grant for Hemp Germplasm Collection Applications for the grant close March 30. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has announced a Supplemental and Alternative Crops (SAC) competitive grants program for hemp and canola. NIFA is looking to fund one project to collect hemp germplasm for the USDA Hemp Germplasm Repository located at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, New York. The maximum grant amount for the hemp project is $125,000 per year for four years. NIFA describes the program as an “integrated research and extension program” that is designed to “produce results to help increase the cost-effectiveness and competitiveness of these two crops grown as components of production systems across the country.” ....
