Assembly District 51 Delegate Re-Run: What a Difference a Fair Election Makes!

Working Progressives) beat the actual non-establishment
United Progressive Democrats big time.
On April 27, in a semi-fair rerun, the real progressives won every single seat, and the Executive Board position as well.
However, the margins in some of these races were razor thin, so no one should get too giddy over the results. Let’s see how the election worked.
The January Delegate Election

If you have not been following the January ADEM District 51 Delegate election, Here’s the short version. With an odd, hard to find election site in East LA and confusion as to the actual hours of voting, it was clear that one faction of the Party had all the advantages; the Durazo/Carrillo/DeLeon/Gomez faction. Other problems included:  ....

Can DONE Threaten Neighborhood Council Stakeholders?

EASTSIDER-Today’s tale involves a stakeholder named Richard Hopp.
Mr. Hopp, for reasons of his own, decided to check out all of the City of Los Angeles websites including those of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and 99 Neighborhood Councils. He was looking for broken hyperlinks (link rot) on the DLANC website (the Downtown LA Neighborhood Councils.)
Anyhow, Mr. Hopp started checking out the awesome new website for broken hyperlinks, aka “link rot” in the trade. Shockingly, he discovered a whole lot of them, and then had the temerity to contact the Neighborhood Council, asking that they fix the problem.
So ok, why Mr. Hopp was interested in doing this is his own business. I am unaware of any law or statute which makes it a crime to check out hyperlinks and look for broken links. In fact, my occasional perusing of EmpowerLA’s efforts with their own website would indicate that anything they do in this area needs adult supervision.  ....

CD 14's Kevin de León Rides Again - Misunderstanding the Homeless?

EASTSIDER-First, we have another Superior Court Judge requiring the City to do something about sheltering LA’s homeless.
Then we have CD 14’s Mayor in waiting, Kevin de León, doing his usual not quite right attempt at a solution. Read on. . .
Here Comes the Judge
“Carter is overseeing an agreement between Los Angeles city and county governments in a case brought by the L.A. Alliance for Human Rights, a group of downtown business owners and residents that sued to force the city to shelter homeless people. Carter is requiring the city to find temporary shelter or permanent housing (with the county footing the bill) for several thousand homeless people mostly those living under or near freeways, because the judge has decided that it’s unsafe to live near the toxic fumes from vehicles.”  ....

Homeless Living in Vehicles, Screwed Again

Homeless Living in Vehicles, Screwed Again
Details

2. The CD organizes evidence from residents and LAPD and brings LADOT into the conversation.
3. The motion is written.
Back in the day of Ed Reyes and Dennis Zine, I’m sure that was true. And it was also true back then that the police and City felt free to tow cars any time they wanted. Of course, that was before the homeless crisis, including a subset of people living in their cars, or trying to.
Anyhow, prominent on the LA City Council Agenda for Wednesday, February 10, 2021 was another attempt to root these homeless folks from living in their vehicles like RV’s. The difference this time was that Gil Cedillo and Curran Price have teamed up to do the deed with a new twist. Here’s the Item and text:  ....

Times Mirror Square, Mike Feuer, and Kevin De León

Details
As the LA Times wrote in 2018:
“Formerly known as Times Mirror Square, The Times’ current Civic Center headquarters is a mix of five interconnected structures that fill an entire city block, bounded by Broadway and Spring and 1st and 2nd streets.

Shortly after Omni bought the property for more than $100 million in 2016, the developer filed plans with the city to demolish part of the complex and build a pair of high-rise residential towers and several retail stores and restaurants.”
Right at the height of power enjoyed by CD14’s Jose Huizar and his PLUM Committee, this was a plum for him in more ways than one.  ....
