The head of the High Council of Beja Nazirs and Independent Chieftains, Sayed Tirik, has again threatened to announce self-determination for Red Sea state, Kassala, and El Gedaref, if the government in Khartoum does not respond to their demands for a separate platform on governance and development in eastern Sudan.
The High Council of Beja Nazirs and Independent Chieftains faction led by Ibrahim Adarob told Radio Dabanga that it was invited by the Trilateral Mechanism to participate in the upcoming Final Agreement negotiations but refused after not being included in the previous stages.
While civilians and pundits cautiously welcomed Sudan’s new framework agreement, and others lauded its signing on Monday, several political parties and groups have expressed their categorical rejection of a settlement with the military.
Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and military leader Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan said that “the military’s final exit from the political process must be accompanied by the exit of the political parties from participating in the government of the transitional period”. Deputy Chairman Mohamed ‘Hemeti’ Dagalo surprisingly called the coup ‘a mistake’.
