Securing visa permits is understood to have proved problematic in Bulgaria, where the UK visa office has been opening for just three hours every fortnight
Visa permit challenges and a lack of UK-based labour have provoked fears that fruit and veg grow will be short of workers at the beginning of the season.
With harvesting set to get underway in the next two to three weeks, the sector was “very concerned”, a senior industry source revealed.

Scotland s fruit farmers say crops may go unpicked this season due to a shortage of migrant workers.
However, one Fife farmer claims Scotland could be up to 1,500 workers short of the 10,000 needed.
Iain Brown from Easter Grangemuir Farm, Pittenweem, says the UK government has left it too late to have a visa scheme for foreign workers fully operational.
The Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) said it would always back our farmers and growers and ensure that producers across the UK have the support and workforce they need. ....

TUNNEL VISION: The NFU’s new horticulture group chairman, Iain Brown, on his farm Easter Grangemuir near Pittenweem.
Fife strawberry grower Iain Brown’s considers his inauguration as chair of NFU Scotland’s (NFUS) horticulture committee a baptism of fire.
The meeting had to deal with the fall-out from a critical report  by Focus on Labour Exploitation (Flex) and the Fife Migrants Forum, which warned the seasonal scheme that allows people from overseas to work in agriculture was at risk of exploitation.
It was also Ian’s first-ever NFUS horticulture committee meeting,  after being parachuted in at short notice to chair the group. ....
