Units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a Nonneeaug Road home and found “extremely heavy smoke” that had pushed through the basement to the first floor, officials said. About 40 firefighters responded. East Litchfield Fire Chief Mark Cattey, who is also the school resource officer at the Bethlehem Elementary School, responded to the house from the school and was able to shut all the doors of the house. Fire officials said this limited ventilation and controlled the fire spread as crews were responding.
