Iowa has huge gaps in race, ethnicity data on COVID cases, vaccinations

Iowa has massive gaps in the data it reports on the race and ethnicity of the people who have tested positive for the coronavirus and those who have received the vaccine, Iowa Department of Public Health data shows.
For weeks state health department data, as reported on coronavirus.iowa.gov, has reported double-digit percentages of race and ethnicity data as unknown or pending investigation. Public health experts warn the lack of information creates a blind spot in understanding and addressing whom the pandemic is affecting and the equity of the response.
As of noon Tuesday, 35% of positive cases were reported as an unknown race and, separately, 38% of people who have tested positive have their ethnicity recorded as pending investigation, the Iowa Department of Public Health coronavirus website shows. ....

Hardest hit by COVID-19, communities of color among most hesitant to get vaccine


Though many are eager to get protection against COVID-19 from a vaccine program being rolled out across Iowa, there’s still work to be done in persuading hesitant Iowans to take the shot when available.
In particular, communities of color which can have a more pronounced distrust in federal officials and the scientific community because of a history of traumatic experiences are skeptical of the new vaccines against the coronavirus, say officials from across the state.
Much of the hesitancy stems not just from systematic racism and historical trauma experienced by these populations, but also from a general distrust of federal leadership encouraging Americans to get the vaccine. ....
