Two weeks after a massive deadly earthquake, Taiwan was rocked by more quakes on the night of April 22, 2024, causing buildings to sway and some to collapse. A viral video posted on Facebook claims to show the most recent of these recent seismic events. However, this is misleading: the footage is a compilation of several older clips from earthquakes in Japan and Taiwan, as well as demolition works in China.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after the earthquake, whose epicentre had a depth of 40 kilometres (25 miles) and which was also felt in Tokyo.
Taiwan's earthquake monitoring agency gave the magnitude as 7.2 while the US Geological Survey put it at 7.5. Television showed buildings in Taiwan's eastern city of Hualien shaken off their foundations.
Bishop Daisuke Narui, SVD, of Niigata, said the quake, which has an estimated magnitude of 7.6, has killed more than 200 people, injured more than 500, and resulted in several aftershocks and subsequent earthquakes, and caused massive destruction.
