In August 2019, researchers Allison Bridges, Dong Guo, Satyajit Bose, and Anyi Wang from the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management of the Earth Institute at Columbia University visited the Hyde Academy in Beijing. The research team interviewed Principal Xie Kang (right) about the sustainability curriculum she implemented in the school.
In China, the government has taken a leading role on sustainability goals in recent years. However, the dissemination of sustainability concepts through formal and informal avenues lags behind these achievements and has not kept up with innovative educational advances in other countries. Currently, the pre-college curriculum is highly standardized with no specific focus on sustainability, sustainable development, or environmental responsibility.

As we go about celebrating Earth Month and Earth Day, it’s worth reflecting on how far we’ve come since last year’s Earth Day. A year ago, we were a month into the pandemic and I remember foolishly pondering whether there might still be Earth Day events in person. Little did I know that we’d still be isolated after more than a year filled with fear, tragedy, loneliness, frustration, and boredom. At times, it has seemed like the pandemic was too big to solve and that it might never end.
