Sen. Cantwell, local leaders tour Meadowdale Beach Park project aimed at restoring fish habitat

U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell along with several state, county, local and tribal leaders got a closer look at the Meadowdale Beach Park estuary restoration project Friday afternoon. The project will restore a historic 1.3-acre estuary to provide essential rearing habitat for chinook, chum and coho salmon as well as cutthroat trout. Puget Sound chinook salmon are listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. ....

Wildfires in Northwest Territory Are so Massive, Their Smoke Reached Portugal


According to data around 245 wildfires are present in Northwest territory but in year 2014, 385 wildfires happened. Though it is highly active in these areas, it is a rare occurrence that it reaches this peak.
On July 3, 2014, on the day itself 123 wildfires were reported in the area and around 92 were still active when the Government approached the area. The year 2014 broke several records and it caused around $56 million in collateral damage. Ranging from the water released, aircraft management, in personnel salaries, and other miscellaneous.

Hutaff Island, near Topsail and Figure Eight, to remain untouched


Conservation groups and landowners have worked together to conserve Hutaff Island off the North Carolina coast, according to a news release from Audubon North Carolina. 
The two-mile long stretch of beach and saltmarsh located near Topsail Beach was one of the last privately owned undeveloped barrier islands in North Carolina.
Now, a partnership between the state Audubon organization, N.C. Coastal Land Trust, the Hutaff/McEachern family, and conservation philanthropist Tim Sweeney means that the area will remain undeveloped.
It sits in between Topsail Island to the north and Figure Eight Island in New Hanover County to the south.
It s important for so many reasons, said Walker Golder, executive director of the Land Trust. It s important for wildlife. It s important for sustainability, for sea level rise. And it s important as a representative habitat. It s important for people. ....
