January is Radon Action Month, free test kits available in Eagle County

Radon is odorless, colorless and extremely prevalent around the state of Colorado. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer, according to data compiled by both the EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Special to the Daily) In an effort to help prevent lung cancer from exposure to radon gas, Walking Mountains Science Center’s Energy Smart Colorado program has partnered with Vail Health’s Shaw Cancer Center and Eagle County’s Environmental Health Department to raise awareness and offer free radon test kits. January is Radon Action Month and is a time to test homes for radon because windows and doors are typically closed. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, approximately 40% of Eagle County homes have radon gas above the Environmental Protection Agency recommended “action limit.” The EPA’s website states that the normal level of radon found in outside air is around 0.4 pCi/L, and the action limit for radon in a home
