A site in Hattie St in Reefton is being used as a milk transfer station by Bulk Liquid Solutions. “[It] resulted in the deaths of eels that had found their way into the oxidation ponds. Eels are not part of the biological processes within the pond, so while an unfortunate event, they are not necessary for successful plant operation,” Mason said. The investigation was ongoing, but the council was reviewing Bulk Liquid Solutions’ waste discharge permit. “The volume and nature of the contamination has not been determined,” she said. “Bulk Liquid Solutions has a trial permit to collect wastewater from the milk transfer station and then discharge wastewater into the reticulation at a pre-determined location on the eastern side of the town.”
