Photo: Marcus Hand George Procopiou Though no formal announcement has been made leading Greek shipowner, George Procopiou has emerged as the top bidder in the sale of Hellenic Shipyards, Greece’s biggest shipyard. When the tender process ended 7 July Procopiou’s EUR62.5m ($70m) bid was the highest according to well informed sources. Located in Skaramanga, west of Piraeus, this is the second attempt to sell the shipyard after bids tendered last December were rejected. Procopiou has reportedly called his Hellenic bid “a very positive development” while stressing a lot of work remains to be done. He has been reported as saying the rapid granting of permissions will be the success of the venture. ....
Sailors’ Society launches expanded free wellness campaign for seafarers, their families and shore staff Shipping companies are being invited to sign up to a free mental health and wellbeing campaign offering support not just to crews, but also their families and shore staff. International maritime charity Sailors’ Society has expanded its Wellness at Sea Awareness Campaign to include families and shore staff. The 27-week campaign, which starts in June, will help seafarers, their families and shore staff understand how they can manage their own wellbeing and navigate common challenges that people connected to the maritime industry can face. It will also offer them access to free support, advice and counselling. ....
“Suspicious object” discovered on tanker Written by Nick Blenkey The crew of a Liberian flagged tanker have found what appears to be a limpet mine attached to the vessel’s hull while conducting ship to ship operations 6 nautical miles south of the Al Bakr Terminal offshore Iraq. The ship’s manager, Dynacom Tankers, has issued this statement: Dynacom Tankers confirms that today at approximately 0500 hours UTC, a suspicious object was observed attached to the hull of our vessel the M/T P ola (IMO 9493767) as she was discharging her cargo during a ship to ship operation in Kaz anchorage, Iraq. ....
