The IRS has incorrectly sent auto-generated payment due notices to taxpayers impacted by natural disasters, triggering confusion among taxpayers and preparers.
The federal tax-filing date was April 18th, but due to wildfires, floods, and tornadoes, taxpayers impacted by declared-disaster areas by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had their filing date extended, depending on the state, until July, August, or October.
After the IRS sent out incorrect notices, taxpayers affected by FEMA-declared natural disaster areas should pay attention to their state's extended tax-filing date.
