Car tax changes: New pay per mile scheme could see families charged £7,000 extra to drive

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Howard Cox said: “At a reported 75p per mile, will cost a family petrol car driver an eye-gouging £6,500 more than they annually pay now in Fuel Duty and VAT (this does not include VED changes).”
The Treasury is considering a new pay per mile system to help fill a £40billion gap in public finances caused by the switch to electric cars.
The Government will lose revenue generated by VED and fuel duty which is not paid by electric cars.
When asked about a possible introduction of a pay per mile scheme, the Department for Transport said they will “ensure” motoring taxes keeps pace with changes on the road. ....

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is said to be considering a 5p per litre hike on fuel duty charges to make a £20 a week Universal Credit increase permanent. Car tax changes: New Epping Forest Clean Air Zone may introduce a daily charge for drivers

He warned the scheme will need “detailed consideration and consultation” before any charges could be introduced.
Mr Bedford said: The Interim Air Pollution Mitigation strategy identifies as one of the measures that a clean air zone is being considered for implementation in 2025.
“How this clean air zone will work, charges for the zone and other issues around its implementation will of course require further work over the coming months/years.
“A suite of other measures will be introduced earlier to achieve a 10 percent conversion of petrol cars to Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV) by 2024/25.
