Bitcoin just cleared another hurdle. It may still stumble

Bitcoin just cleared another hurdle. It may still stumble
In a landmark move, El Salvador has become the first country to adopt bitcoin as a legal form of payment. But there’s still tons of pressure on the cryptocurrency.
What’s happening: A majority of lawmakers have approved a proposal from Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele that will allow bitcoin to be used as legal tender in the country alongside the US dollar. It’s a bold move that’s likely to be cheered by bitcoin fans. But it may not help prices to stabilize, with some strategists warning the digital coin could plunge toward $20,000, where it was trading in December 2020. ....

Dogecoin frenzy forces UK fund manager to offload $1.1-billion Bitcoin stash

Markets News
United Kingdom-based fund manager Ruffer liquidated its $600-million Bitcoin (BTC) bet after growing nervous about the speculative frenzy in the cryptocurrency market, including huge rallies in meme-based tokens such as Dogecoin (DOGE).

It continued selling as the pair established newer highs in January 2021, breaking past the $40,000 level. Ruffer had wound up its remaining Bitcoin position by April, netting $1.1 billion in profits from the sales, or an 83% return for the fund. ....

Tesla Earnings Buoyed by Bitcoin

Tesla reported its first quarter earnings Monday afternoon to a mixed reaction on Wall Street.
While Q1 revenue was up 74% over the same time period last year, according to the Wall Street Journal, investors seemed a little less certain as they began digging into the numbers. Production goals fell short of Wall Street expectations, according to analysts surveyed by WSJ, while profits were boosted by regulatory credit sales and, surprisingly, Bitcoin.
In a filing with the SEC in February, Tesla made public its purchase of $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, while a subsequent selling off of 10% of that position in Q1 led to a $101 million addition to the company’s bottom line profits, according to Tesla’s chief financial officer Zach Kirkhorn. ....
