Construction projects to start at number of District 186 schools


Springfield School District 186 s oldest building is getting an addition with classrooms and smaller group spaces and an elevator for the first time.
The construction won t change Dubois Elementary s vaunted facade, which faces Lincoln Avenue and has been the entry point for the school since 1896.
The school building sits on what was part of the Sangamon County Fairgrounds and then Camp Yates, a training camp for new recruits and militias from around the state, according to SangamonLink, the online website for the Sangamon County Historical Society.
Ulysses S. Grant first took command of Union troops there in 1861 and made his headquarters in a bungalow on the school s present-day site. ....

A woman is dead, shot in broad daylight in the 200 block of North Lincoln Street in Springfield.
Deputy Police Chief Josh Stuenkel says police in the area, responding to a call of shots fired, saw someone lying in a front yard and another with a handgun.
The coroner was called to the scene. Stuenkel says after attempting to negotiate with the alleged gunman, police shot a beanbag at him and took him into custody.
Area schools were notified. At least two, Sacred Heart – Griffin High School and Dubois Elementary, were placed on a short soft lockdown. ....

Shooting in Springfield leaves one person dead and another in custody


A woman is dead after a shooting Friday near Dubois Elementary and Sacred Heart-Griffin High.
Springfield Police responded to a shots fired call in the 200 block of North Lincoln Avenue just before noon.
“Upon arrival, it was clear by our officers that there was a deceased victim and another individual who was armed with a handgun,” said SPD assistant chief of police Ken Scarlette. “After several tense moments of negotiations, several members of our emergency response team and other officers were able to utilize less lethal [force] and take the subject into custody.”
Local police contacted officials at Dubois Elementary and Sacred Heart-Griffin High, as both schools were placed under brief lockdowns that had been lifted by 12:45 p.m.   ....
