How a drowned village in India reappears each summer, to be flooded by visitors and litter A new tour could change that

Kurdi, in Goa, India, was submerged under a reservoir when a dam was built in 1986. The village reappears each summer as the waters recede, and has become a hotspot for selfie takers.

The Drowned Village

The Drowned Village This gem has found a particularly good spot to hide away. Though it is out of sight for most of the year, during the dry season the Village of Vilarinho da Furna emerges from the water and presents its ancient ruins dating back some 2000 years. It is said that this village in the municipality of Terras de Bouro, Braga district, was founded in the first century during roman times. Located downstream from the Rio Homem, it became a peaceful place to live over the years, until 1967 when the construction of a dam began. It was clear that if the dam were to be built, the village would flood and hundreds would lose their homes. So the Portuguese Electricity Company (Companhia Portuguesa de Electricidade) offered a small amount of money to each of the about 300 villagers to pack up and move away from what was soon to be Portugal’s very own Atlantis.
