Trump Announces Veto of Driftnet Fishing Bill
President Donald Trump on Friday announced he was vetoing a driftnet fishing bill that recently passed with support from both parties.
S. 906, or the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act, would expand the definition of large-scale driftnet fishing to bar the use of gillnets with a mesh size of 14 inches or greater.
Trump said in a veto message to the Senate that, in passing the bill, “Congress has ignored the fact that the regional fishery management process has had strong, bipartisan support since its creation.”
“By forcing the West Coast drift gillnet fishery to use alternative gear that has not been proven to be an economically viable substitute for gillnets, the Congress is effectively terminating the fishery. As a result, an estimated 30 fishing vessels, all of which are operated by family-owned small businesses, will no longer be able to bring their bounty to shore. At a time when our nation has ....

“The recreational fishing and boating community has long advocated for transitioning away from large-mesh drift gillnets which needlessly kill non-target species including sportfish,” Jeff Angers, president of the Center for Sportfishing Policy, said in a statement at the time. “Today marks a significant victory for marine conservation, and we are grateful for the bipartisan effort to get the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act across the finish line.”
Proponents of the measure will have to wait until the new Congress because there is no time left in this session to overturn Trump s veto. Feinstein has indicated she will press again for the legislation during the incoming Biden adminstration. ....

January 2, 2021 - Washington - Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Friday released the following statement after President Trump vetoed the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act.
This bipartisan bill, introduced by Senators Feinstein and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) would phase out harmful large mesh drift gillnets that are only used in federal waters off the coast of California to catch swordfish and are responsible for a high percentage of bycatch including whales, dolphins and sea turtles. ....

I am returning, without my approval, S. 906, the Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act. America’s fishermen have made great sacrifices to ensure that our Nation’s marine fisheries are a sustainable economic engine for coastal communities. Under my Administration, the number of United States fish stocks subject to overfishing is at a historic low. This achievement is the result of a transparent and collaborative regulatory process that is supported by regional fishery management councils. At council meetings, fishermen work with Federal Government and State government representatives to meet their statutory obligations under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. ....
