essentially, withdraw it forces and suspend military activity and let the local tribesmen handle some type of negotiations with the rebels on the ground. we are now getting reports, jon, nine rockets or some type of mortars fired at downtown misurata, at least three people killed, ten people wounded as the battle for that port city continues to rage. jon, back to you in the new york. jon: the fighting and maybe the stalemate goes on. david lee miller live from libya. thanks. -and-a-half new information on another one of our top stories, the disappearance of holly bobo covering an item investigators believe belongs to her. so far they aren t telling us what it is. we re live in atlanta with more. elizabeth, what s the latest in the search? are volunteers out again today? reporter: well, unfortunately, because of the severe weather we ve been talking about, searchers were asked to go home both today and tomorrow. they won t be out for the rest
militarily on the regime. meanwhile, as you said, we ve seen a great deal more fighting in just the last 24 hours. some dramatic new video coming out of the western portion of the country. a western village where now the rebels say they have regained ground. a lot of what s happening in western libya, specifically the western mountains, is not going reported, is being overshadowed by what s happening in tripoli, misurata and some of the larger cities, but battles do rage in the west. there are reports of thousands of people trying to leave western libya, make their way into tunisia. food in that area. also, we are told, in very short supplies. as i mentioned, the city of misurata, at this hour we are told that families in misurata, including young children, are seeking shelter there in a mosque. this now as the gadhafi regime continues its barrage on that port city despite saying days ago that it was going to,
misurata port, you find thousands of refugees, most of them from african countries. and they re stuck here. they re stranded here. they can t get anywhere. the worst thing about it is, first of all, all the refugee camps are makeshift. they have basically no food, no water that they re getting from the international community. what they re getting, they re getting from the people of misurata, and they re right in the middle of the combat zone. they gave us this people of shrapnel they say artillery shells fell right near the area where the refugees are. this man from ghana says he and many others have been staying under the tarps for more than a month and feel abandoned by their government. want to go to ghana simply because it won t be comfortable we hear gunshots and shouting all oever. the city, we want people are dying. people are dying. we are not comfortable. we want to leave. so we need help from u.n.
neighborhoods. they have nowhere to run. the opposition-held city of misurata is encircled by pro-gadhafi troops. this man says he barely managed to get his family out of the city center and into the school on the outskirts. all the houses next to ours were knocked down in the fighting, he says, people were killed in the houses right next to ours, including women and children. constant barrages of artillery, tank, and mortar fire have clearly traumatized especially the children. as urban combat destroys more and more of downtown misurata, many foreigners who came here to work during better times are now stranded. some were hoping to leave by a misurata port, but they can t get out so they ve ended up here at a makeshift refugee camp near the port. it was set up when the fighting started, and now stretches for self miles. all along the road leading to
