Chinese Overfishing in the South Pacific Devastates Some Islands' Livelihoods — Radio Free Asia

Chinese fishing boats’ illegal overfishing in the South Pacific has been devastating some island economies.
According to two former U.S. officials, “illegal, unregulated fishing by Chinese vessels has become common in American Samoa and Guam and as far east as Hawaii.”
Samoa, noted for its volcanic peaks and tropical rainforests, is the southernmost territory of the United States.
At one point, a tuna cannery on American Samoa, one of the island’s largest employers, had to temporarily suspend operations due to a lack of fish.
China’s fishing fleets, which reach as far as Latin America, West Africa, and even Antarctica, have been adding to the strain on worldwide fishing stocks, according to organizations monitoring the issue. ....

One year ago today, as part of a Women’s History Month series curated by Dana Rubin, RCP readers were treated to the wisdom of journalist and author Lillie Devereux Blake. Titled “A Woman Spoke Today,” the series featured a cross section of addresses made by women at pivotal historical points.
Ms. Blake’s came in the spring of 1883 in response to lectures by Morgan Dix, rector of Trinity Church in Manhattan and a trustee of Columbia University. Dix’s weekly homilies imparted his vision of “Christian womanhood.” Finding this view of women’s roles far too constricting, Blake rented her own meeting hall and on four consecutive Sunday evenings she gave a rebuttal to “the haughty rector of Trinity.” ....
