The first first lady to venture into publishing was nellie tapp who recalled her time in the white house in her 1914 memoir, recollections in four years. Since then another for slaves have published memoirs. We will focus tonight on five women with serve in a position in the last few years. Published in 1845 the narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass he tells his early life as a slave in maryland lynn tatian. Learning to read and working as a shipbuilder in baltimore and as cape from slavery to the north as a young adult. In of several memoirs he wrote about his life, this first narrative was an antislavery treatise, best and further the cause of abolition.
