First in chicago, police say this weekend was the city s deadliest this year. 100 people total were shot and 18 killed. A 6yearold girl among those wounded in the shootings and in that same location eight hours earlier, a 5yearold girl was shot. Two chicago police officers were also shot and wounded yesterday while trying to disperse a crowd. In houston, one police officer was shot. In milwaukee, two police officers were wounded in a fireworks attack. In las vegas one police officer was shot and another one to do new york city, at least 26 people were shot over the holiday weekend and the numbers of shootings rising more than 42% year to date. David blight is class of 1954 professor of american history and director of the center for the study of slavery, resistance and abolition at yale university. He s the author of a dozen books including editions of douglass s first two autobiographies. His most recent book won the 2019 pulitzer prize for nonfiction and 2019 francis partman prize. In 2001 he was awarded the frederick douglass prize. Edna greene medford is professor of history at howard university. She specializes in africanamerican history, the civil war, and reconstruction. She s a member of several advisory boards, among them the association for the study of africanamerican life in history, the lincoln forum, abraham lincoln association, the abraham lincoln institute and the group of president lincoln s cottage. She s the author of several books. Harold holzer is director of roosevelt house public policy institute at hunter college.

Narratives, than what they are narratives conveying more than what they are structure churly defined by in an object itself. For those of you who missed last week s program, let s talk about this book. How did it come about and how effective do you think it is at conveying the narrative suite of the civil war in had only 50 objects? well, it came about as i confessed last week because louise mirror asked me to undertake the project for the historical society. And it was a lucky day for me. And you remember we got to see three times 50 objects, an array before us on some conference tables in the historical society so it was a matter of picking representative objects, exciting objects, which, as you say, stand in for the big history of the civil war item by item, personal story by personal story. And it was remarkable at the end that we constructed the history of the war from the abolitionist movement to the 13th amendment which abolished slavery. And it was great fun to work with you on
