Asteroids have been hitting our earth for around four billion years. Most famously, the chicxulub asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs and transformed life on this planet. On 15 february 2013, a 10,000 ton asteroid entered the atmosphere over the russian city of chelyabinsk. It exploded with 30 times the energy of an atomic bomb, injuring 1,600 people. And we didn t see it coming. Professor alan fitzsimmons is an expert in the observation and measurement of asteroids. He s one of the scientists trying to make sure we don t miss the next big impact. Now, i want to start with some jargon busting, because there s a lot of stuff out there. There s asteroids, there s comets. Can you take us through that?. Sure. it is no coincidence that that law was put into place that year. 1863 was codified. beloved was codified right after president lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, enslaved people in georgia started fleeing their captors. when cornell law professor put it bluntly quote, it was a slave catching law for slaves that attempted to flee. and it remained the state saw during jim crow when it was used to justify the lynchings of four black people in january of 1912. it was used again to justify the killing of two black couples in july of 1946. black couples who were dragged from their cars and shot dozens of times by white men. the naacp, has documented more than 530 acts of lynching in georgia alone between 1882 and 1968. the violence was second only to that of mississippi, the citizens arrest law helped excuse some of that violence. what a terrible old law. the problem, is that the law was still on the books in 2021. this spring the state of georgia repealed that law, it o

evening, jeff. 12 hours over a span of two days to make her decision, once the jury finished deliberating and the judge started listing the names of the defendants and going down all the counts. things got emotional right from the start. we the jury find the defendant travis mcmichael guilty. whoever just. hearing there inside the courtroom. the judge immediately ordered him to be removed. the judge then continued. where all three men were found guilty of multiple counts of murder. travis mcmichael, that s the man who shot ahmaud arbery three times found guilty on all nine counts. 8 of the 9 counts. the man who filmed a portion of the shooting william roddie bryant found guilty of the six of the nine counts including multiple counts of felony murder. and as soon as that verdict was announced in full, there was a huge celebration from outside the courtroom.
